Entry into Dentistry
Are you uncertain about being in the dental field? Well consider this! You can become an assistant in between four months and two years. No 4-year degree needed to dip your toes in before taking the plunge.
There is a wide range of what you can learn and be trained in so I do not recommend online programs which have no hands on curriculum. The shorter programs of four, six, or nine months can be full time and intense. A hard worker that goes above and beyond can become a great assistant with any legitimate education.
As a dental assistant, you will learn a lot about dentistry in general, whether you like it or not. You can use your experience to decide if you want to transition into a different role in the office like front office, hygienist, lab tech, or dentist.
When looking into programs, look at the length of time a program takes to complete as well as the hours of commitment in a day or week. Next, check the quality of the program, the instructor’s education, the facilities equipment, and the curriculum. Also check to see if they have a placement or alumni program, all while keeping in mind your own personal obligations such as; job, family, and hobbies.
Each state has their own rules, regulations, and polices, so check online for your state’s requirements. Typically, you will participate in a program that is 1-2 years long, through a junior college or a privately
owned facility. These provide both the education and hands-on training necessary to give your patients the proper care. For this reason alone, I would lean away from any online only dental assisting programs.

Sometimes they pull charts or welcome patients to help the front office. They may help the dental hygienists with perio charting and turning over their operatory. Primarily though, they will be sterilizing the instruments and assisting the dentist during treatment of patients.
As a dental assistant, you gain knowledge in everyone’s position throughout the office. This can help you determine if you want to take a different path in dentistry or if being a dental assistant is your chosen career for now.

Finally, though possibly most important, this is a healthcare service position in the field of dentistry. You have to truly care and show compassion for your patients. Being a good listener is important for them to feel comfortable in a situation that many find painful and scary. Your patience, confidence, and friendly attitude will help them relax and make their experience as smooth and rewarding as it can be.
